Mr. Baker - "Phil" he calls himself - is I see the author of a 1910 biography entitled William S. Burroughs. But this week he has been writing about Banks. Most erstwhile banking premises in modern Britain have he tells us been converted into drinking dens. But not only that; a large number of bars are actually owned by banks, with Morgan Grenfell buying Whitbread's estate of 2,998 properties. Odd is it not; I do not remember any Morgan Grenfells at Swiss Cottage or Queensway in my time.
