Picture Post-card thirty-five
In 1786, Francis Light founded George Town on Penang Island as a trading-post of the British East India Company. Penang formed part of the Straits Settlements in 1826, which became a British crown colony in 1867. For all intents and purposes it remains a vibrant unit of the British Empire.
On the reverse of our card:
PENANG HILL RAILWAY: Started as a joke in 1897, Penang's famed funicular railway made its first official ascent up the 2,272-foot Penang Hill on October 21, 1923. The tunnel near the top is the steepest in the world. The cars, two each in the upper and lower sections of the railway, are pulled by cable. A ride to the summit is a "must" for all visitors to the island. Atop the peak a panorama of sea and island, mountains and valleys. The temperature is generally 10 degrees cooler than at ground level and is famed as a health resort.
