This is a slippery subject, Wendy, and as I am no musician, I am not even qualified to attempt an answer. Megumi Okamoto argued that the most essential characteristic in music is that it offers an "alternative reality and an alternate way of being," introducing the term "profound" to describe such human experiences. Music Blog - The experience of profundity in musicIs there anything more profound about the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, for example, than the latest dance track to be played at a local night club? A great musical critic once said of Bach that he is a spectator of all musical time and existence, to whom it is not of the smallest importance whether a thing be new or old, so long as it is true. NNDB - Johann Sebastian BachYet what is true?
