' Chimerica' is a neologism and portmanteau coined by Niall Ferguson and Moritz Schularick describing the symbiotic relationship between China and the United States, with incidental reference to the legendary chimera. In March 2010, anticipating the risk of tensions between the two nations escalating into a currency war, Ferguson published a paper forecasting that Chimerica would soon unravel. Wikipedia - ChimericaTiananmen Square, 1989. As tanks roll through Beijing and soldiers hammer on his hotel door, Joe – a young American photojournalist – captures a piece of history. Almeida - ChimericaNew York, 2012. Joe is covering a presidential election, marred by debate over cheap labour and the outsourcing of American jobs to Chinese factories. When a cryptic message is left in a Beijing newspaper, Joe is driven to discover the truth behind the unknown hero he captured on film. Who was he? What happened to him? And could he still be alive? I should perhaps report to Sydney Grew and everyone reading ' The Third' this Bank Holiday weekend that ' Chimerica' was something of a ' tour de force' last night at the Almeida Theatre last night: Almeida - Chimerica If you have the opportunity to see the play before the critics do (Tuesday is press night), it is a really thought-provoking new play (10/10)!
