Mrs. Hale has just put out a very big book; Titian: His life she calls it; it occupies 832 pages. It is said to be "the first attempt to chart his stylistic development through the story of his life since Crowe and Cavalcaselle published their Titian: His life and times as long ago as 1877." According to Mr. Fenton, who reviews Mrs. Hale's production, "the suggestion is that art historians look down their noses at biographers as being not at all the genuine article." Here is Titian's painting of Sacred and Profane Love from 1514. The suggestion is that they are different. May I be permitted to suggest that they are identical?
