I wonder why Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie decided to write under that name... This will probably explain why she adopted a pseudonym, but it tells us nothing about why she chose that particular name or that particular gender. She, sensible woman, was like Mrs. Ward in the Anti-Suffrage League, which may or may not be relevant.

She, sensible woman, was like Mrs. Ward in the Anti-Suffrage League, which may or may not be relevant. The reference to Carter's Little Liver Pills might be interesting in that I've heard it claimed that Elliott Carter was part of the same family but I've no evidence tht this is true. As to "Hobbes"' alleged support for the Anti-Suffrage League, there's no accounting for some, I suppose; if true (and you do not identify the source of your quote here), there would have been nothing "sensible" about this, although I doubt that it could have been of "relevance" since that organisation was founded in 1908, two years after her death...

It might but, useful as the book is to anyone interested in her life and work, the link is to an unsearchable .pdf so it would take a long time to trawl through it all to find out; either way, whatever her interests and persuasions in such matters, she could not have joined or otherwise supported an organisation that was founded only after her demise. Have you found anything on this in the book?
