In retrospect, the Battle of Hastings was a catastrophe for the English people, though the roots of English governance and culture created before 1066 would in time re-emerge. The British Museum - Live screening: Michael Wood on Anglo-Saxon and Norman EnglandThis was only 950 years ago today. Incidentally, 2016 also marks the millennium of the conquest of England by Cnut (r. 1016–1035). Although largely remembered today for the later story of his supposed failure to hold back the tide, Cnut was one of the most successful early kings of England. He forged a North Sea empire that included Denmark, Norway and England and is remembered in Denmark as Cnut 'the Great'. The British Museum - 1016: the forgotten conquest of England and Cnut's reignWhether the year 2016 will be equally significant, only time will tell! Both the United Kingdom and the European Union could potentially unravel, but I guess that all human institutions are by their very nature transient?

To-day a fractured sea-wall is all that remains of what might have become a magnificent harbour. In 1897, the foundation stone was laid of a large structure, but there was insufficient money to complete the work: the "Harbour arm" remains uncompleted. It was later partially blown "up" to discourage use by the German invasion forces.

The town has seen something of a renaissance over more recent years! Inland, you might like to visit Bateman's, Sydney, the home of Rudyard Kipling!
