The Frenchman Olivier Messiaen's lengthiest composition is Saint François d'Assise. In our presentation the part of the Angel is sung by a woman, and we wonder whether this accords with the composer's original intention. Does any one know? The work is in three acts; here is the first. If there is any interest, and our members request it, I will post acts two and three. Sample images:Logged in members may click HERE

I heard this at the Proms a few years ago, Uncle Henry! It was very good. I don't know about the Angel. According to Wikipedia, L'Ange is sung by a soprano, although the libretto refers to the Angel as "he" throughout. So it might have originally been conceived as a male role, although there are not many male sopranos around!
