Good afternoon, Gerard! I trust that all is well with you. If I may address all four of your questions below directly: 1. Why exactly is MI5 so frightened of Communists? I do not know. Perhaps Communists have been a threat to security? 2. Does our membership enjoy an extract of Lessing (Doris) at bed-time? No, although Gerard might! 3. Where are the colonialists to-day? Colonies. 4. Does any of us entertain immoral purposes with a) transatlantics, b) Indians, c) Chinese or d) Negroes? I do not know. Gerard might, as otherwise, why ask the question?

Why exactly is MI5 so frightened of Communists? I do not know. Perhaps Communists have been a threat to security? What is "security"? Is it a pretty, wantable and smart sort of thing, and if so do we in fact want it?

I do not know. Perhaps Communists have been a threat to security? What is "security"? Is it a pretty, wantable and smart sort of thing, and if so do we in fact want it? It's a mythical concept widely advertised by governments of many kinds as part of a cynical ploy to frighten their citizens into acceptance that they (the governments) have a duty to supply it and to finance it at said citizens' expense. Your question, though a pertinent one, is thus far easier to ask than to answer truthfully and convincingly by the advocates of the nebulous notion of "security". As to Doris, I almost wrote that lessing is mooring but wisely thought better of it...

Where are the colonialists to-day? One would like to answer "consigned to history" but facts sadly suggest that the death of colonialism is a protracted and painful one. Does any of us entertain immoral purposes with a) transatlantics, b) Indians, c) Chinese or d) Negroes? Whatever kind of question is that?! What is an "immoral purpose" that any individual might "entertain" with entire nations' populaces? What are "transatlantics"? What are "Negroes" other than a word that, unlike colonialists, really has fortunately been consigned to history? And, finally, who are "us" in this context? - the baker's dozen members of this forum?

I don't really know what security is, Gerard! It might seem as though no one does!
