The Baftas are at the Royal Opera House this coming Sunday! Like last year’s close-run race between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, Best Film is a duel between a landmark, history-making film and an outstanding piece of movie showmanship. The two respective contenders are Boyhood and Birdman: there have been signs of a late surge for Iñárritu’s high-wire superhero satire, but I suspect, like last year, voters will go with the history-maker. Will Birdman get his wings clipped? Will Boyhood bloom? BBC One - The British Academy Film Awards

Great fun was had by all! I don't actually know whether it matters who wins, but Boyhood was named best film, with Richard Linklater also awarded as best director and Patricia Arquette winning best supporting actress. With a total of five awards, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel was the evening’s most awarded film, recognised for its original screenplay, makeup/hair, both costume and production design, and for its music. The Theory of Everything won the award for outstanding British film as well as best adapted screenplay and best actor for Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of the young Stephen Hawking. BFI - BAFTAs 2015: the winners in fullI won nothing!

The Theory of Everything won the award for outstanding British film . . . What kleines c (and Mr. H.) do you think has been the outstanding British film not just of this year but ever? I would plump for Carry On Teacher (1959). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carry_On_Teacher

What mention should we make of Stephen Fry, ahinton? Your choice of Carry On does suggest a problem with British cinema, Sydney. By international standards, it may not actually be that good! The Third Man, Brief Encounter and Lawrence of Arabia were once voted the top three British films of all time by the BFI, but they do not even make the world's top 50! Perhaps the outstanding British films have yet to be made, Sydney?
