We all remember do we not the time when the Mrs. Thatcher Sibyllistically announced that there is "no such thing as society." Can we take it further, though, and conclude that there is no such thing as Great Britain?

We all remember do we not the time when the Mrs. Thatcher Sibyllistically announced that there is "no such thing as society." Can we take it further, though, and conclude that there is no such thing as Great Britain? Actually, for all that this remark has been widely credited to her verbatim, it's probably about as true as the assertion that Milton Babbitt actually said (or wrote) "Who cares if you listen?". Leaving that aside, however - and with a view to answering your question - the fate of what has for some time been known as Great Britain hangs in the balance and, if Scotland votes for independence therefrom in a few months' time, a considerable dent will have been made in it; furthermore, if the Welsh then take encouragement from this and manage over the next few years to achieve similar independence for the principality, there will indeed thereafter be "no such thing as Great Britain" or indeed any other kind of Britain other than as an item for the history books. All of that remains to be seen or not, however...
