After a lively debate which considered a range of excellent work, including some outstanding new commissions, the 2012 jury of the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) chose English National Opera’s beautifully realised production of 'Eugene Onegin' for its superb orchestral playing and singing led by Music Director Edward Gardner which made a familiar work fresh and dynamic for today’s audiences.

And here is a list of previous winners:
So English National Opera (ENO) is producing award-winning operas in the twenty-first century, despite its current financial difficulties. Another point to make is that there is no one institution which dominates the RPS Awards over the years. Great opera is performed all over Britain and the rest of the world, both by professional companies and students. Indeed, I should perhaps confess that I often prefer student productions, for example, 'Kommilitonen!'

I also really enjoyed 'Figaro' last summer.
