Well, it could be argued that we are all, in many ways, an accident of evolution and that life on Earth is ultimately unsustainable anyway. Speaking personally, I may also be an accident of history, although my parents have never really clarified this point for me.
Stephen Hawking once suggested that he did not think human beings would survive the next thousand years, unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet.
