Greetings from kleines c. I should perhaps confess that although I have been promming for many decades, I have never bothered to show up for the Last Night of the Proms, either in the Royal Albert Hall or in any of the Parks around the country!
BBC - Prom 75: Last Night of the Proms
I do, to be honest, have slight reservations about the celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall, a curious relic of nineteenth century jingoism in the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, I do generally attempt to experience some of the Last Night on BBC radio, television or online, as I rather like the sense of communal enthusiasm, as long as it embraces not just England and our United Kingdom, but the entire world. We are, in a profound sense, all one!
The Daily Mail - Last Night of the Proms were 'dangerously English,' says ex-BBC boss Sir Nicholas Kenyon
I remember reading an article by Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, Sydney. He concluded thus:
" ... Don't forget who you are, for that is who we aspire to be."[/i]
Our own celebrations, however, tend to take place on the Penultimate Night of the Proms, and as ever, everyone reading 'The Third' and other social media is cordially invited to join us, once again!
The Third - Calendar - Prom 74: Vienna Philharmonic (17:30), Friday 6 September 2013
The programme includes some contemporary poetry at the Royal College of Music, a selection of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ music and Bruckner's Eighth Symphony, so if you can make it chez c sometime this weekend, why not all come along?
BBC - Prom 74: Vienna Philharmonic
I propose some toast: to the first, the second and 'The Third'! Three cheers from kleines c and the gang (whatever you are drinking)!
