Is trade better than aid? Are oranges better than lemons?

Anne-Sophie Pic finds the flavours of lemons more versatile in her cooking, I suspect, ahinton. I prefer orange juice to lemon juice, for example, but the acidity of lemon is particularly good with fish dishes, whereas orange classically goes well with a fat meat like duck!
Valence is just north of the Provencal city of Orange, ahinton, famous for its oranges since Roman times. Citrus heaven for Anne-Sophie!
As for trade, it is generally more useful than offering aid. Give someone a job, ahinton, rather than a handout, a commission rather than a grant!

It is an interesting part of France, ahinton, a good place for Uncle Henry to visit on his next European tour, if more than six hundred miles south of London. Google Maps - Valence - FranceIn terms of global trade, tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world, representing something like 9% of global GDP (Gross Domestic Product), so the economic importance of such leisure activities cannot really be underestimated. Would you still consider a sojourn in the south of France, Uncle Henry, or is long-haul travel now too much for you?

One summer festival that might appeal to Uncle Henry in the south of France is close by in Aix-en-Provence: Aix FestivalWhen I was at school, I could have gone on a French exchange to Aix, but my parents were suspicious of the French, and would only let me go on a German exchange to Stuttgart. Perhaps that experience made more of a Germanophile than a Francophile, ahinton. Of course, the world's most glamorous film festival also takes place on the French Riviera: Cannes Film FestivalUnfortunately, I have never been to either, but the south of France is certainly rich in culture. How could Uncle Henry resist a sojourn chez Pic?

Would you still consider a sojourn in the south of France, Uncle Henry, or is long-haul travel now too much for you? Perhaps - once we have sold the cottage. But in fact France no longer appeals. Have you ever been to the Far East kc? The food there would certainly be superior to any of that French crone's scrappy offerings.

If I may address your question directly, Uncle Henry: " ... Have you ever been to the Far East kc?" When I was younger, I did once go climbing in the Himalayas. Unfortunately, my memories of Asian food do not really match anything that France can offer. I remember eating a goat curry at about 5,000 metres in altitude, prepared by our guide to the Karakoram, Muhammad. If the mountain won't come to Muhammad, Uncle Henry, then Muhammad must go to the mountain. We did manage to stand on the disputed border of China (Tibet), India and Pakistan, surveying the Tibetan plateau to the East. The food was terrible! A few years later, I flew, on business, to Japan. The Japanese, it has to be admitted, can cook, and cook well! Writing in ' The Daily Telegraph', Danielle Demetriou reported that there were 29 three-star Japanese restaurants across the country as highlighted in the 2012 publication of the Michelin Guide to the Western cities of Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara. The figure eclipses the 25 establishments currently bestowed with three coveted stars across France, a country traditionally regarded as home to the world's finest cuisine, chefs and restaurants. Telegraph - Japan relishes status as country with most three-starred Michelin restaurantsSo Japanese restaurants have recently surpassed the French even at the very highest levels. Kyoto, the former imperial capital, confirmed its status as the culinary epicentre of Western Japan, with seven of the three-star 15 restaurants based in the historic city, which is famous for its culinary heritage. A further five three-star restaurants are located in Osaka, a city renowned as the birthplace of "okonomiyaki" – a kind of pancake cooked on a hotplate table – while a further two top-starred eateries are in Kobe, a name famous for its associations with high-quality beef. Among restaurants to be newly crowned with three stars includes Fujiya in Osaka, an establishment founded in 1935 which has been described by some food critics as Japan's answer to the famously experimental Spanish restaurant El Bulli. Restaurants from Nara city are also included for the first time, with particular attention bestowed upon Wa Yamamura, a newly-appointed three-star restaurant. While the majority of restaurants featured in the guide serve Japanese cuisine, the mastery of the nation's chefs at Western cuisine is reflected in the growing presence of establishments defined as "fusion" or "contemporary French". Meanwhile, for the first time, Korean food has made an entry into the exclusive category of Japan's Michelin starred restaurant, with the allocation of a star to an establishment called Houba in Osaka. The English restaurant critic, Andy Hayler, wrote the following review of Ryugin in 2012, although I have never been to this particular Tokyo restaurant: Andy Hayler - Ryugin

Are you big in Japan, Uncle Henry? I daresay that he's the same size wherever he might be.

Perhaps the Japanese are relatively small, ahinton. Incidentally, Uncle Henry, the twentieth century witnessed the triumph of rhythm over melody. Thus, what we now need is a good tune.

The London ' Times' leads this morning with some editorial comment on Amazon’s use of ‘dynamic pricing’, which raises difficult questions about ethical commerce. Our prices are always flexible. Of course, the danger is that consumers will be ripped off, but at the same time, it becomes possible to pocket a bargain at the end of the day's trading. The chief problem with Amazon for me is that it is becoming too powerful, paying virtually no tax and undercutting local businesses. This is one of the dangers of Global Trade! The Times - Good Girl Gone Brand - Celebrity sells like never beforeFew celebrities draw a bigger crowd than Rihanna, even when she is not there herself. Fans formed a queue outside Harvey Nichols at 7am yesterday to be among the first to get their hands on her new range of beauty products. Thousands more customers were held in e-queues on the department store’s website. Celebrity endorsement is not new. Stanley Matthews promoted cigarettes in the 1950s. Michael Jordan moves shoes and even kleines c moves men's fashion in ways that Uncle Henry would find surprising in the terrible 'teens.
