If people did not bother to vote, that is their choice, and it should be restricted. Democracy expects extraordinary things of ordinary people. I shall therefore take a simple majority, as that is all we can ask for in the circumstances, ahinton.

If people did not bother to vote, that is their choice, and it should be restricted. Democracy expects extraordinary things of ordinary people. I shall therefore take a simple majority, as that is all we can ask for in the circumstances, ahinton. But even if you choose to do so, do you really believe that so close a result, especially one in which two of the four UK countries voted one way and the other two the other way, is acceptable as an indication of "the will of the people" in so significant an issue as this one for the entire future of UK? I don't! I believe that a 60%/40% result either way would be the very minimum that could reasonably be regarded as indicative of "the will of the people". If, on the other hand, any part of this procedure from start to where we are now is found to be illegal, a lot of people will be shamed; see www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-brexit-court-challenge-second-referendum-dr-andrew-watt-a7709136.htmluk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-reverse/campaigners-file-legal-challenge-over-brexit-reversibility-idUKKBN1722M1www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4275724/Gina-Miller-threatens-legal-challenge-Brexit.htmlwww.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-27/brexit-to-bring-enormous-legal-challenges-top-u-k-judge-saysand www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/brexit-talks-illegal-uk-expats-british-abroad-not-vote-french-lawyer-julien-fouchet-european-a7745216.html .

The people of the United Kingdom voted differently. The integrity of the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union, is therefore in some doubt. It is ultimately a question of politics, Alistair, and politics is the apprenticeship of the possible (Bismarck).

Good evening to everyone reading ' The Third'. ' The Financial Times' leads tomorrow with some editorial comment that Catalonia’s referendum is no basis for statehood. The salmon pink newspaper argues that negotiations on improved self-government are the right way forward, whatever the result of the referendum. Spain will remain one country, at least for now! As for Scotland, it also remains part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Alistair? Meanwhile, ' The Guardian' leads on Catalonia with some editorial comment to step back from the brink as well. ' The Guardian' argues that Madrid has badly mishandled a deliberately provocative referendum. Viva Espana, Uncle Henry!

It does for the time being, yes, but with the Brexit "negotiations" going so very badly it might be that Scotland's one-time reluctance to hold a second independence referendum might begin to fall away; after all, neither it nor NI voted in favour of Brexit. Personally, I'd like to see the island of Ireland reuinted, but that's another story for another day; everyone whom I know who lives in NI considers themselves to be "Irish".

Writing in today's ' Times', Andrew Eames discovers medieval castles, sleepy villages — and forests filled with wild boar. So the land of Bach, Kant and Luther is there to be discovered, only a few hours' drive from the United Kingdom! The best place to stay is probably in Germany's capital, Berlin! Bleibtreu Hotel, BerlinHead south for Bach and Luther or north-east for Immanuel Kant, arguably the greatest philosopher of all time. Immanuel Kant held that the most interesting and useful varieties of human knowledge rely upon synthetic a priori judgements, which are, in turn, possible only when the mind determines the conditions of its own experience. Thus, it is we who impose the forms of space and time upon all possible sensation in mathematics, and it is we who render all experience coherent as scientific knowledge governed by traditional notions of substance and causality by applying the pure concepts of the understanding to all possible experience. But regulative principles of this sort hold only for the world as we know it, and since metaphysical propositions seek a truth beyond all experience, they cannot be established within the bounds of reason. There is therefore no necessary connection between reason and experience, Lord Byron! There is no such thing as a rational belief!
