As it happens, I dined at La Dame de Pic London yesterday lunchtime. Although it was a business lunch, I had three courses for £39. My particular choice was 'Les Landes Foie Gras' (9/10), a crème brulee with Granny Smith apples, raisins and toasted hazelnuts. The main course was 'Line Caught Cod' (10/10), with a confit of smoked eel and beetroot and mint consommé, which I had to soak up with bread because the sauce was so delicious. The 'Cornish Crab' was good too! For dessert, I selected 'Drome White Peach' (10/10), a lemon balm and liquorice cremeux, and consommé and confit white peach infused with turmeric. The whole meal was superb, and I had a small glass of Petit Ours Blanc followed by an Alsace Pinot Blanc. Domaine Du CouletThe Whisky Exchange - Marc Tempe Alsace Zellenberg Pinot Blanc 2014I suspect that Uncle Henry would be tempted by such food, and he could even stay at the stunning Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square. Four Seasons - London - at Ten Trinity SquareBefore it was redeveloped as a hotel and restaurant, it was used to film my favourite James Bond film, 'Skyfall'. Uncle Henry would love it!

You may suspect - that is, of course, your prerogative - but his recent account of lunch at Gloria's somewhere in the Antipodes might be thought to suggest an interest in the partaking of restaurant food and drink of somewhat different persuasions to - and at rather more modest prices than - those on offer in établissements Pic! Still - let's wait and see whether he takes up your kind invitiation!

I was wondering whether Uncle Henry could raise his game from Gloria's Café Diner in Ulverstone, Tasmania. According to TripAdvisor, this is a great cafe for breakfast and lunch with a large selection of Australian and Philippine and Chinese dishes. But for lunch with kleines c, Uncle Henry, I would recommend the Welsh Organic Lamb, a roasted saddle with chamomile, goat yoghurt and smoked potato filled pasta. I am never quite sure what red wine to recommend with lamb, but Cornas ‘Billes Noires’, Matthieu Barret 2012 could make sense. Domaine du CouletWe could share a bottle together over Sunday lunch next weekend, Uncle Henry! Perhaps if ahinton is in town, he could join us too!

Can you make it, Uncle Henry? How about you, ahinton? I have just checked the restaurant's reservation system, and there seems to be plenty of space of available, so you can bring anyone you want! La Dame de Pic - Lunch MenuThe lunch menu changes daily, but you can always go a la carte, Uncle Henry, even if it is more expensive that way around! I suppose that it all depends whether there is something you particularly want to try out from the larger menu. La Dame de Pic - A la carteAs for wine, the ‘Mád’ Tokaji, Late Harvest, Hungary 2015, looks as though it might go extremely well with some of the desserts. See you, and any entourage, at Ten Trinity Square! If anyone else reading The Third wants to join in what promises to be a fascinating party, just let me know as soon as possible. La Dame de Pic - Current Wine ListIt would be good to see some Prommers after the Last Night, for example!

It is a pleasure, ahinton. I never thought that the spectacle of the Last Night festivities in the Royal Albert Hall would particularly appeal to your sensitive musical tastes, but I suspected that you might be tempted by the thought of a delicious meal the following day. Uncle Henry is coming?

Uncle Henry is coming? You are correct on the first two counts but I cannot comment as to what the member concerned might make of your kind invitation and it will accordingly be necessary for him to provide his own response on that, as and when it might suit him to do so, if indeed it does.

Uncle Henry is not going to fly around half the world without good reason. From a Tasmanian point of view, the cultural attractions of London, for example, the Last Night of the Proms, are tempting, and when combined with a three Michelin star meal opposite the Tower of London, the company will be superb. It is therefore a shame that you will not be able to join us on this particular occasion, ahinton. To make it even more tempting to Uncle Henry, his nephew is working in the City, and would like to introduce him to the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
The MPC is committed to the greatest possible degree of transparency around its decision-making. The minutes of the MPC meetings are published simultaneously with the interest rate decision. They also record the votes of the individual members of the Committee. The minutes give a full account of the policy discussion, including differences of view. As recommended by the Warsh Review, beginning from March 2015 transcripts of the MPC’s policy meetings will be published with an eight-year lag.
In addition to the MPC minutes, the Bank publishes its Inflation Report every quarter. This report gives an analysis of the UK economy and the factors influencing policy decisions. The Inflation Report also includes the MPC's latest forecasts for inflation and output growth. Because monetary policy operates with a time lag of about two years, it is necessary for the MPC to form judgments about the outlook for output and inflation. The MPC uses a model of the economy to help produce its projections. The model provides a framework to organise thinking on how the economy works and how different economic developments might affect future inflation. But this is not a mechanical exercise. Given all the uncertainties and unknowns of the future, the MPC's forecast has to involve a great deal of judgment about the economy.
Beyond its own publications, MPC members regularly appear before Parliament – most commonly the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee – to explain its actions. MPC members also give regular speeches and media interviews to explain the MPC's policy decisions and thinking to the widest possible audience. All members conduct a series of regional visits throughout the UK to engage in discussion with individuals and businesses on issues affecting their economic lives. This is a two-way dialogue, which gives members valuable first-hand intelligence about the economic situation as experienced over the length and breadth of the country.
Uncle Henry could be sent to the Conservative Party Conference to stir the Tories up with a stalking horse, whilst kleines c forces a by-election in the Labour marginal constituency of Kensington. Adopting the messianic election slogan, "Grenfell and rose", kleines c could win a landslide in Kensington, and force a challenge on Theresa May's leadership of the Conservative Party. Flying to Berlin to deal with Angela Merkel, kleines c could call for the immediate suspension of the stalled Brexit talks whilst a new approach to the ever closer union of the people of Britain, Europe and the world are structured.
The German Chancellor would be sympathetic to the idea that kleines c could win a referendum for an ever closer union of the peoples of the world right across the European Union and beyond. Is it not time for the European Union to look beyond its own borders?

So how should we celebrate the Last Night of the Proms in 2017, ahinton? What flag should I bear? The Union Jack? The European Union? The Welsh dragon? And what about lunch? Should my promenading friends be treated to lunch at the Savoy, or even at the Queen of Spades with Anne-Sophie Pic? The best bet is probably to ask Uncle Henry, who is not coming at all! A good lunch is hard to beat, but shall I cook for all my guests on Sunday afternoon? How about something healthy for autumn? BBC Good Food - Recipes - Roast salmon with preserved lemonHow's that, Uncle Henry?

For all those who survived the Last Night of the Proms 2017, congratulations. It’s been a while since Fiona Maclean took herself out for a special lunch. A hedonistic indulgence – a good lunch is something that can’t be hurried and so needs a full afternoon to recover. Weekday lunch menus though can be the hidden pearl at some of London’s top restaurants – a snip of the price of the a la carte but without the time constraints of their evening equivalent, the pre-theatre menu. La Dame de Pic has crept onto the London dining scene, despite a pedigree that might have warranted more attention. The lady in question is the eponymous Anne-Sophie Pic, who comes from a long line of French chefs (both her father and her grandfather had three Michelin stars at the family restaurant in Valence. Anne-Sophie followed in the family tradition and won three stars herself there in 2007. But, she’s built up a restaurant collection too – with offerings in Paris and Lausanne as well as London. Since Fiona hadn’t had the opportunity to visit the new Four Seasons Hotel in Trinity Square, a friend’s birthday seemed like the perfect opportunity to treat ourselves and take a peek at the hotel too. It’s set in a lovely part of London, a stone’s throw from Tower Bridge and next to Trinity House, a beautiful events venue designed by Samuel Wyatt in 1794. Ten Trinity Square, the home of the hotel, is a little more recent but just as stunning. Originally the headquarters of the Port of London Authority, it was designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Cooper in the Beaux Arts style and opened in 1922. It does have all the grandeur of something from the Great Gatsby – high ceilings, ornate plasterwork and some stunning detail. Grade II* listed, it’s elegant and refined interiors are largely restored from the original. Tan leather banquettes and comfortable chairs surround the dark wood glass-topped tables set with immaculate silverware. Although there’s an art deco feel to the room with large mirrors and high ceilings, the staff wear contemporary style leather bar aprons and, because the dining area is neatly sectioned, there’s a feeling of intimacy where ever you happen to sit. As perfect for a business lunch as a celebratory meal. Fiona liked it a lot. So do we. Why are you not coming today, ahinton and Uncle Henry? London Unattached - Ladies who Lunch – La Dame de Pic

Good morning to you all once again! I trust that all is well with all of you this weekend. Red Hot Pawn asks us all to use this particular forum, topic or thread to talk about anything off-topic. ' The Daily Telegraph' leads this morning with some editorial comment that The Last Night of the Proms should be a unifying national event. For all those posters who missed out on Saturday night's entertainments, here are the words in full! This British national air was originally included in Alfred, a masque about Alfred the Great co-written by Thomson and David Mallet and first performed at Cliveden, country home of Frederick, Prince of Wales (the eldest son of George II and father of the future George III, as well as the great-grandfather of Queen Victoria), on 1 August 1740, to commemorate the accession of George II and the third birthday of the Princess Augusta. Frederick, a German prince who arrived in England as an adult and was on very bad terms with his father, was making considerable efforts to ingratiate himself and build a following among his subjects-to-be (which came to naught, as he predeceased his father and never became king). A masque linking the prince with both the medieval hero-king Alfred the Great's victories over the Vikings and with the current building of British sea power – exemplified by the recent successful capture of Porto Bello in Panama from the Spanish by Admiral Vernon on 21 November 1739, avenging in the eyes of the British public Admiral Hosier's disastrous Blockade of Porto Bello of 1726–27 – went well with his political plans and aspirations. Thomson was a Scottish poet and playwright, who spent most of his adult life in England and hoped to make his fortune at Court. He had an interest in helping foster a British identity, including and transcending the older English, Irish, Welsh and Scottish identities. Thomson had written The Tragedy of Sophonisba (1730), based on the historical figure of Sophonisba – a proud princess of Carthage, a major sea-power of the ancient world, who had committed suicide rather than submit to slavery at the hands of the Romans. This might have some bearing on the song's famous refrain "Britons never will be slaves!". Incidentally, Thomson wrote the word "never" only once, but it has been popularly corrupted to "never, never, never", possibly because it is actually easier to sing. The same theme was repeated in the Navy's own "Heart of Oak", written two decades later: To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves/For who are so free as the sons of the waves?. In 1751 Mallet altered the lyrics, omitting three of the original six stanzas and adding three others, written by Lord Bolingbroke. This version known as "Married to a Mermaid" became extremely popular when Mallet produced his masque of Britannia at Drury Lane Theatre in 1755. Wikipedia - Rule, Britannia!Afterwards, we all headed for a celebratory Sunday luncheon at La Dame de Pic London. Although not the Queen of Spades, Anne-Sophie Pic cooks some of the most innovative food in the world today. One of the first significant arrivals of 2017 was Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square, inside the Beaux Arts Port of London Authority building at Tower Hill. Just 100 rooms include 11 suites on the first floors of the building (higher up are private residences and the members’ club in collaboration with Chateau Latour); other highlights are the underground spa with pool, Mei Ume for Chinese/Japanese cuisine and La Dame de Pic, the restaurant by three-Michelin star chef Anne-Sophie Pic, which has received rave reviews. The food and company were superb, Uncle Henry, but where was Alistair Hinton? Four Seasons - Ten Trinity Square - La Dame de Pic
