Florence Ellen Hungerford Milnes was born in 1855, a daughter of the first Baron Haughton and a sister to the Marquis of Crewe. She married Arthur Henniker-Major in 1882, and wrote under the name Florence Henniker. Her fiction was sometimes labelled unwholesome, particularly with regard to its obsessive interest in old men's love for young girls. She is supposed by some to have been the original of Sue Brideshead in Jude the Obscure.
