According to Wikipedia, Uncle Henry, Marie Corelli's novels sold more copies than the combined sales of popular contemporaries, including Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling, although critics often derided her work as "the favourite of the common multitude." Wikipedia - Marie CorelliWere any members of the common multitude well-bred, Uncle Henry? What about Mary Mackay herself?

Wikipedia - Marie CorelliWere any members of the common multitude well-bred, Uncle Henry? What about Mary Mackay herself? Even if it mattered and even if general agreement could ever be reached about what might constitute "well-bred" in humans as distinct from other creatures (neither of which is remotely likely), it would surely be rather late in the day to try to speculate on that in respect of Ms Corelli, wouldn't it? - she's been dead for almost 93 years, after all...

Uncle Henry may be late in the day, ahinton. One Victorian novelist I have come across, for family reasons, is Allen Raine. Here are two of her more popular novels online for everyone reading ' The Third': Gutenberg - Allen Raine

Thank you kleines c, how interesting! The lady has we see an entry in Mr. Sutherland's book: And the "BL 12" at the bottom signifies that the British Library holds twelve of her productions. Thanks also for the Gutenberg links.

I'm just curious as to why you've provided them without any explanation...

What is the point? asks a member. Well there are three points:
1) The books are there for readers' (possible) pleasure, interest, edification and enlightenment.
2) There is nowhere else I know where all the writer's labours are brought together in such an easily accessible and unadulterated form.
3) One of the principles of civilization is that the whole is greater than its parts; the member may remember our B.B.C.'s effort in putting out all Bach's production in the space of a week or so (flawed though, that one). Imagine if you will a kind of museum in which the totality of one's compositions are brought together and distributed as recordings to interested passers-by. Art in its pure form what?

I have now come across The Strange Visitation in one of my back bookcases; happily this has made completion of the collection possible.

Here is a list of thirteen works of "Allen Raine" at the British Library (none is directly downloadable from there, as far as I know). The items marked "dd" are available for download from Hathitrust.org (ask me for the method, if you are interested). And the one marked "DD" is downloadable from the Internet Text Archive at archive.org/details/texts (these in addition to those already indicated by member kc). dd Mifanwy: A Welsh Singer: a novel (1897) dd Torn Sails: a tale of a Welsh village (1898) dd By Berwen Banks: a novel (1899) [or "Bangs"] dd Garthowen. A story of a Welsh homestead (1900) [or "Carthowen"] dd A Welsh Witch. A romance of rough places (1902) dd On the Wings of the Wind (1903) A Change at Dawn (1904) dd Hearts of Wales: an old romance (1905) dd Queen of the Rushes: a tale of the Welsh revival (1906) DD All in a Month, and other stories (1908) dd “Neither Storehouse nor Barn” (1908) Where Billows Roll: a tale of the Welsh coast (1909) dd Under the Thatch (1910) So I can post most of these books here if any one would like to have them. Just the following two don't appear to be downloadable anywhere at present: - A Change at Dawn - Where Billows Roll What is the "Welsh revival" kleines c? Are you part of it?
