www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/24/theresa-may-constitutional-crisis-brexit-deal-institute-for-governmentI've just subscribed to the Private Eye to keep in touch with the latest antics and their advocates: "semi-Brexit", "not boil down to a binary choice", "new grown-up relationship" and so on. The solution is actually obvious: 1) Abolish the evil and meaningless concepts of "nation" and "border"; there will no longer be a G.B. or a Scotland or a France, or a China, etc. - and of course no need for colonies, armies, navies or air forces. 2) Abolish female suffrage completely; what a silly idea it has been. Back to your kitchens, dears. 3) Abolish the vote for men of the lower classes. Ditto. A misunderstanding of Plato, perhaps. 4) Abolish "money"; replace it with absolutely equal and uncompromising socialism (as explained by Wilde, Shaw, and many more of our greatest men).

A misunderstanding of Plato, perhaps. 4) Abolish "money"; replace it with absolutely equal and uncompromising socialism (as explained by Wilde, Shaw, and many more of our greatest men). 1. Who would do that? Clearly, no one, otherwise it would already have been done. As it is, the number of nations and therefore borders between them has of late been increasing rather than decreasing. Colonies are certainly as superfluous as they would be unwelcome and any and all reductions in armed services across the globe would be most welcome and would benefit all, however - but who's going to do that? 2. Yes, what an ineffably silly idea - not to say backward step - it would be to abolish the right for women to vote. Spending time in the kitchen does not preclude anyone from voting in elections, whether they be men or women. Furthermore, women's entitlement to vote might make no difference to who might occupy the seat of government in any case, any more than has giving the vote to those ages 16 and over (as in Scotland). 3. Who decides who are the "lower classes" and what of those who move from one "class" to another? 4. What about our greatst women? In any case, try buying a car, house, music score or a gin and tonic with uncompromosing socialism rather than currency and see how far you'd get! Mon Dieu! Here you go again! Isn't it high time to pension off that hobby horse now that it's of such vintage as to be beyond effective veterinary treatment?

Congratulations on subscribing to ' Private Eye', Sydney! Your calls for abolition will be ignored, I suspect, although I admire your magnificent irrationality. As ahinton suggests, we may be heading in the opposite direction!

As ahinton suggests, we may be heading in the opposite direction! Whilst I can appreciate that "irrationality" for what it is, even if not its alleged "magnificence", I find nothing in it to "admire", especially in its point 2) which is arguably the most absurd of the four.
