Here are four of J.S. Bach's church cantatas, than which of course no better music has ever, or could have ever, been composed: - BWV 62: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland (Now comes the Saviour of the Heathen) - BWV 91: Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (Praise to You, Jesus Christ) - BWV 40: Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes (And then the Son of God appeared) - BWV 63:.Christen ätzet diesen Tag (Christians mark this day)This performance took place last December at the Saint Roch church in Paris. It is in general good, but there is one great defect: somehow a group of women were allowed to participate in the singing. Bach wrote these lines for boys' voices. The warbling women with their painted faces cannot but look only absurd. They are one of those curiosities of modern life that will be derided in a hundred years' time (or sooner we hope, even). To go on and experience this approximation to Bach's great music anyway, simply click HEREIt is conducted by M. Herreweghe and the duration of the performance is an hour and forty-three minutes.

Thanks for that link kleines c - it is a very thorough discussion of the question, covering all the angles. Perhaps one day clever technicians will discover some recordings of my own performances embedded in the walls and floor of St. Thomas's.

Nor do I, any more than I do or indeed should object to women being brought into British Cathedral choirs as has been done in most of them, albeit very late in the day (Gloucester being the most recent one to introduce them, I believe); Hereford Cathedral is ever-increasingly in the minority in this regard and is now the only one of the "three choirs" Cathedrals not yet to admit girls to its choir, which is especially sad considering how fine the music making is there - in fact, the text at www.herefordcathedral.org/music/choir/becoming-a-chorister shamefully begins "Could your son be a chorister at Hereford Cathedral?"...
