To give it the necessary life drive and purpose it seems to me that this forum really needs the injection of at least twenty new members. Yet the Times Literary Supplement, the Third Programme that once was, the Spectator, and even the conversation of our current contributors do not seem to amount to enough of a draw. Therefore, rather than endeavouring to attract people, we might do better to take over and poach - rather as what was done in the case of the Art-Music forum. Seek out some moderately lively forum whose administrators are losing interest and probably do not wish to continue. Take an interest in the interests of the members of that forum (it will hardly matter what interests they are); join them; wait for the right moment; then pounce with an offer of a new and better home here for those interests - their existing interests, that is - be it numismatics, mountain climbing, knitting or even "jazz."
That is to say, what we need to do now in preparation for such a move is to look out for such a forum - one that is quite busy but has seen better days - and once found and joined and used and encouraged, to post a few dummy contributions or lures here as well to show our compatibility.

It is interesting to note that of the seven billion people alive today, Sydney, over 2.4 billion are now online. World Internet Users and Population StatsOver the course of the twenty-first century, we have seen an explosion in the use of social media, so the ways in which we interact with one another seem to have fundamentally changed over recent years. As you know, Sydney, I have a marked preference for traditional face-to-face interaction, but I also use the post, the (mobile) telephone, skype, email, and other media, including the occasional blog, message board and discussion forum. In terms of membership, I am not really bothered by the number of members of ' The Third'. I am happy enough with an interesting dialogue between two members, as in this particular thread. 2.4 billion would probably be too many! In my opinion, eight is really optimal, although I can understand why you might want twenty, Sydney. How about the BBC Blogs? BBC - Blogs
