The Chinese Govt is demolishing the Jokhang Temple - the central temple of Lhasa - in order to replace it with a shopping complex and multi-storey car-park. The Jokhang Temple was founded in the C7th, and - except for a period in the C8th-9th - has been in constant use since then. More detailsNo doubt our Maoist chums are cheering?

The British régime has been just as bad. So much destruction took place in the fifties sixties and seventies. For example I believe it was Nantwich where - last time I was there - a graveyard in the centre was being busily bulldozed behind fragile plywood screens in readiness for the construction of a road or some "shops." The occasional bone could be seen flying through the air - a sight that has remained in the memory; so the following page does not tell the full story! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listed_buildings_in_NantwichOf course it is possible I am confusing it with Middlewich or even Northwich. And the same odious régime is notorious for incarcerating artists and composers for trumped-up political "crimes" - Ronald Stevenson for example who was put away for over a year merely for having inappropriate thoughts. The practice continues to this day.

And did not the French army use the Egyptian pyramids as targets for testing their cannons?
