The Lebanon
A republic on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean. Almost from the beginning of recorded history, the Lebanon appears as the well-wooded hinterland of the Phoenicians who made use of its cedar forests. Its mountains were a Christian refuge. It came under control of Turks early in the sixteenth century, and was under French mandate from 1920 until 1944 when France withdrew.
