The role of the client is integral to the success of all projects involved in the RIBA House of the Year competition. The RIBA recognises the critical role clients play in the achievement of great architecture through the Client of the Year Prize, supported by The Bloxham Charitable Trust. First presented in 1998, the Prize is currently judged by Tom Bloxham MBE and RIBA Awards Group Chair, Julia Barfield and Marks Barfield.
Richard Murphy’s own house in Edinburgh has been awarded the 2016 RIBA House of the Year. It speaks to its context with direct references to the Georgian terraces, and with a clever change of scale that is at once deferential and powerfully striking in the street. The RIBA House of the Year is awarded to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. The award, sponsored by Hiscox Home Insurance and Paint & Paper Library, replaces the previous title 'RIBA Manser Medal'.
Richard Murphy founded his practice in 1991. Its early reputation was built on highly crafted and innovative domestic work in the Edinburgh area. The practice has since won an unprecedented 22 RIBA Awards, and has considerable experience in the Arts, Education, Housing, Health, Public and Community use and Masterplanning. From our offices in Edinburgh we have been involved in projects across the UK and Ireland, Europe and Sri Lanka. Richard Murphy Architects defined their goals as to make architecture equally of its place and of its time. This selection of projects illustrates that approach looking equally at careful contextual responses to designing within and adjacent to existing buildings and also constructing new buildings within the contexts of established landscape and urban patterns.
Our new book of the practice, "Of its Time and of its Place - The Work of Richard Murphy Architects", published by Artifice, is now available for sale from us, cost £29.95 plus post and package. Please use our contact us webpage. The book is also available on Amazon.co.uk. Richard Murphy Architects occupies the majority of the historic "Breakfast Mission" in the heart of the Edinburgh Old Town and shares the building with other professionals - find out more at www.thebreakfastmission.co.uk.
