Scottish independence was never really settled by the 2014 referendum! The Nationalists still want further autonomy, but is the tide turning against them. Does Brexit give Nicola Sturgeon another chance? And what about Northern Ireland? How can it protect its borders in Ireland? Wales is more cautious, but it still wants to keep up with the rest, Alistair! Can the United Kingdom remain truly united any more, Uncle Henry?

Even if Britain is to break up, all that is really valuable could yet remain. There could be a sovereign Scotland, Alistair. There could even be an English Republic. It could be better than the last one. There might even be a consolidated Wales, if you could get the North to talk to the South on the right side of Offa's Dyke! Even the island of Ireland could finally find some peace and unity.
The English have a remarkably uniform set of assumptions about themselves, Uncle Henry, almost all of which are demonstrably false. They think they love animals, but impose quarantine. They proclaim fair play in sport, but inhabit perfidious Albion. They say they are reserved when they are sexually repressed. They claim that they are uncomplaining when they are uncommunicative. Never complain; never explain. The English call indiscipline individualism and bloody-mindedness common sense. They expouse a mythic Arthurian past, of Celtic origins, and mistake it for a progressive story of peaceful change and democratic characteristic. What a wondrous place this is. Crazy as fuck, Uncle Henry, but adorable in the smallest degree. What other country could possibly have come up with place names like Tooting Bec and Farleigh Wallop, or games like cricket that go on for five days and never seem to start?
What an enigma Britain will seem when historians look back on the turn of the third millennium CE. Here is a country that fought a noble war, dismantled a mighty empire in a generally benign and enlightened way, created a far-seeing welfare state, in short, did everything right, and then looks upon itself as a chronic failure, the sick man of Europe. The fact is that this is still the best place in the world for most things. To post a letter, to go for a walk, to watch television, even the BBC, to buy a book, to venture out for a drink in the local public house, to go to a museum, to use a bank, to seek help, call 999, or to stand on the mountain top and take in the view. All this came to me in the space of a lingering moment, Uncle Henry. I like it here. I like it more than I can say. God Save The Queen!

Good morning to everyone reading ' The Third'. I trust that all is well with all of you this new working week. ' The Times' leads today with some editorial comment on going off the cliff. ' The Times' thunders that Britain’s future is more important than the Tory leadership soap opera. The foreign secretary’s vision for Brexit should be considered on its own merits, then rejected. I commend such an approach to everyone reading ' The Third'.

' The Guardian' concludes that Vince Cable’s party is positioning itself for a change in the political weather. About time, too, Alistair? About time that it so positioned itself, about time for a change in the political weather or both? Cable's chances of attaining Prime Ministerial office are of the order of camels and eyes of needles. As to what the political weather is likely to be, I suspect a series of ever more indecisive and weak hung Parliaments for the foreseeable future. Is this down to climate change? I don't ask...

Good evening to everyone reading ' The Third'. I trust that all is well with all of you this beautiful Saturday evening. What are you all up to this weekend? ' The Independent' leads today with some editorial comment that Labour is traditionally the party of the oppressed. So it’s about time Corbyn sorted their issue with anti-Semitism. ' The Independent' concludes that until Corbyn is seen to be on our side against the antisemites, British left-wing Jews won’t be able to contribute to the party. This is a matter for the Labour Party Conference to consider. Are they racists, or not?

' The Sunday Telegraph' leads todmorrow with some editorial comment that pledging to reverse the ban on Uber would help the Tories win back voters they've lost]. ' The Telegraph' transmits that the ban on Uber is politically-motivated. This is not something you would stand for in Tasmania, Uncle Henry, so it sets a legal precedent around the world?

Good morning to everyone reading ' The Third'. I trust that all is well with all of you this new working week. To all those who came along to see a film at BFI Southbank at the weekend, thank you very much indeed. The food and drink were also good; the company so much better! Congratulations to all! ' The Independent' leads today with some editorial comment that amidst the excitement of the conference, Labour supporters would do well to remember the huge challenges facing the party. ' The Independent' opines that Jeremy Corbyn should guard against complacency, and not forget that he needs to appeal to a wider group to win power. Do you guard against such complacency here in ' The Third', Uncle Henry?
